Monika Bohinec

Mezzo-soprano

The Slovenian Mezzo-soprano Monika Bohinec has been an ensemble member of the Wiener Staatsoper since the 2010/2011 season. Since her debut, she has performed major roles there, including Eboli (Verdi: Don Carlos), Mrs. Quickly (Verdi: Falstaff), Fenena (Verdi: Nabucco) and Sara di Nottingham (Donizetti: Roberto Devereux). In the premiere of Dvoràk’s Rusalka she sang the Foreign Princes, as well as Cassandre in the premiere of Berlioz’ Les Troyens in autumn 2018. In the 2019/2020 season she was seen in roles such as Azucena (Verdi: Il trovatore), Ježibaba (Dvoràk: Rusalka) and Knusperhexe (Humperndick: Hansel and Gretel). Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 her performances as Ulrica in the premiere production of Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera and Erda (Wagner: Das Rheingold and Siegfried) were cancelled.

She will also make her scenic debut as Ortud (Wagner: Lohengrin) in the 2019/2020 season and will return to the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich as Amneris (Verdi: Aida). Guest engagements of the last seasons brought her to Theater Chemnitz, where she performed as Fricka (Wagner: Das Rheingold and Die Walküre), which she also sang in a concert performance in Ludwigsburg. At the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden she sang in the premiere production of Mussorgksy’s Boris Godunov in the role of Marina and returned in May 2019 to sing Ulrica. She made her role debut as Klyämnestra (Strauss: Elektra). in April 2019 in Karlsruhe, where she has also sung the role of Sara di Nottingham.

Further guest engagements include appearances at the Bayerische Staatsoper, the Semperoper Dresden, the Oper Frankfurt, at the Salzburg Festival and the Lake Festival Mörbisch am See. Monika Bohinec was engaged by the Metropolitan Opera as Brangäne (Wagner: Tristan und Isolde), a role she also sang in Australia.

In 2006, while studying at the Salzburg Mozarteum and at the University of Musik and Performing Arts in Vienna with Prof. Claudia Visca, she made her operatic debut as Clarissa (Prokofiev: The Love for the Three Oranges) at the Slovenian State Opera. This led to further engagements there as Konchakovna (Borodin: Prince Igor), Suzuki (Puccini: Madama Butterlfy), Ježibaba and as the title role in Bizet’s Carmen. Monika Bohinec was subsequently engaged at the Nationaltheaters Mannheim where she performed the roles of Carmen, Sara di Nottingham, Maddalena (Verdi: Rigoletto), 3rd Lady (Mozart: Die Zauberflöte), Giulietta (Offenbach: Les Contes d Hoffmann), Laura and Cieca (La Gioconda), Principessa di Bouillon (Cilea: Adriana Lecouvreur), Suzuki and Ulrica.

As a sought – after Lied and concert performer, Monika Bohinec has appeared in recital at Vienna’s Musikverein. Furthermore, she performed in the traditional New Year’s Concert at the Wiener Konzerthaus as a soloist in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. Her most recent appearances include the Mezzo-soprano solos in Rossini’s Stabat Mater in Lille and Schubert’s e minor Mass in Slovenia. Monika Bohinec has performed at renowned concert halls around the world, including the Philharmonie am Gasteig in Munich, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Salle Pleyel in Paris, Carnegie Hall in New York and the Philharmonic in St. Petersburg.

Monika Bohinec can be heard on the complete recording of Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Wiener Staatsoper under the baton of Christian Thielemann as well as on the recording of Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta alongside Anna Netrebko. She appears on DVD recordings from the Salzburg Festival including Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” and Winter’s “The Labyrinth.”
